Did anyone not get to see it?

In the tender embrace of autumn sunshine, we enjoyed a beautiful Breed Show. Our thanks to Clodagh Fallon for her quiet professionalism in presenting this show to the Cocker Community practically single handed, for the Committee, we just heard the odd whisper. It just happened and we were told to turn up at our leisure lol. Thank you Clodagh, so very much.

The Show started with a minutes silence followed by applause for our two departed Pals, Harry Graham, an institution within and past President of the Dublin Cocker Spaniel Society - who gently slipped away this August in his 94th year and Miss. Sally K. Kelly, President of the Cocker Spaniel Club of Ireland, who tried to sneak away quietly only last month, but failed miserably.

We all heard your ringside comments today Sally - whispered in the gentle breeze.

It is with tremendous regret I have to announce the death this afternoon of Ms. Sally Kelly (Acarreagh).

She served as this Clubs President in recent years and to lose this Lady at the height of her powers seems unfair when so many of us have vivid recollection of her at the ringside of the BRG Show just a few short weeks ago.

JUDGES CRITIQUE

It was a shame that so many of the Cocker people were in-convinced by the mid morning relocation to different ring. One parks, sets up, enjoys the banter with ones colleagues near ones ring.

To be upended en-masse and without being able to relocate is annoying. The Club classes suffered because of this. It was not fair to the Community.

"Last Calls" for exhibitors who had just left a class to run back to their vehicles to grab the next dog were so common to be "Ridiculous".

Fair comment, to remind the Black, Red or Golden, that they hold a remit to be a Cocker Club first! Consideration of this for future events would be appreciated.

Mr. Henry (Harry) Jospeh Graham.

1919 - 2013

The Club has learned today the sad news that Harry Graham passed away yesterday.

Harry was a member of Cocker Spaniel Club of Ireland since 1948, an Officer/ Committee member and Honorary Member for many years. He was a Past President of the Dublin Cocker Spaniel Society and was indeed its current Vice President.

His Hardet lines are in the pedigrees of many of today's particolours and no Cocker breeder can ask for a better legacy. He last exhibited in the early 1990's; retiring to the kind care of the Brabazon Trust Nursing Home. His love and interest in the Breed never waned.

We had the pleasure of having Harry attend our 80th Show earlier this year and while his sight had dimmed, his mind's eye and the ring side judging was as sharp as ever.

We invite our membership to submit to the Club your "considered thoughts" regarding this edict.

The release may just be an excerpt, and the full statement may well set out a new compreshensive syllabus for the Judging Process, Qualification and Licensing of same.

It would be a shame if it is a "slight of hand" attempt to raise funds.

What damage it could cause to the what has been a "selfless act of giving back" to the Canine Community on this Isle and how it may discourage potential future Judges from bothering to make an effort remains to be seen.

Later Journey - Photo Essay.

Too many times over the years, we passed the signpost for Castlepollard on the way to today's show, so off the cuff and in glorious sunshine we ventured off route to pay our respects to Lick Bla Country. ("Lick Bla").

We set coordinates for Foyran and its graveyard, where Dorothy was buried in the Fagan family plot one quiet Thursday in March 1994, - just nineteen years ago. The road narrowing with lush summer growth enveloping passenger and driver while grasses retook the tarmac making furrows by applying a vigorous and continuous ridge to the middle of the road.

In this beautiful landscape, our goal was just a tiny bit further along than technology guided us and once spotted; we halted on a verge over a small bridge opposite the graveyard.

Nestled between a family home and a farmstead, the graveyard is a field back from the road, accessed by a little step in the wall, a small bridge over a stream, a duck under a single strand of electrified fence wire.

The Graveyard is raised to meet the hill with a small gate and wall steps granting access. Inside... it is waist high with nettled grass, one sees barely a handful of standing headstones and some larger monuments.

The Kirk itself is but stones held together with Ivy, one glimpse inside reminds one of childhood dens in the ruins of other places.

This day it was sad and forgotten, the headstones unable to perform their purpose and recall their charges in the lichen tints of weathered stone.

While clearing one headstone with a clearly defined Cross, the other side remained blank except for the crinkle of plastic when our feet flattened this jungle. This grave was attended until a few years ago, empty containers buried below the growth yet on the surface hinted another sad story.

We retreat to climb the far wall as there was no clear path to the other side of the Cemetery. Three momumentals and other falling headstones inhabiting. No "Fagan" was visible. In nineteen years could newly carved letters have been lost this way?

How many headstones are hidden and flat beneath this place?

We'll need to check with those that attended the funeral to verify this location, somehow it felt a right place, yet we'd hoped for more dignity.

One newly minted Club badge was placed just in case. If not here, we were close. A token gesture for a life of service to the Club.

We set sail to Lick Bla townland, but missed the house. A nice spin, we'll be more prepared next visit. Even if we ran a fools errand and missed by miles, it still puts any ring work in perspective.

Stiloga Carling Black Label, named after Lisa's Dad's occasional tipple and a most beautiful wee Gentleman of the Breed spent ever so much of the day waiting for the the Shows Best Baby Puppy. He won his Class just after Noon, but a wait of Six and a half hours ensued before he was allowed to do his bit for puppydom in the ring. Too long a day really for the wee folks! Thomas and this Club think BBPIS should be before the Show Body judges any of the Groups! Anyway after such a looooooooooooooooooooong wait, a giddy Thomas enjoyed the ring and bugger the result!

A pensive Zara, (Baysway Dentelle Noire), weary after the demands of securing two Class firsts this weekend. She loves the "Sunny South" as much as the rest of us and has decided to move. After the glory comes the practical, pictured here, close to the brick foundations of her "Self-Build".

It's going to take a lot of "logs" to build this Cabin, but there is no stopping this determined Puppy!

Martina (who could not attend) - would have "beat it into him" to leave the "Teapot" stance at home, but it all got a bit too much on the day. Given the later Results, we all can forgive Paudie for being a bit "Tetchy on the day!" Paudie, I can only apologise after the fact that they all chose to look away at this moment - rather than share the pain you were feeling!

Sadly we missed the World Record, but happily this lays the way to next year and another attempt. Only a few of us at it, and while a certian VP who shall remain nameless, took full advantage to run for the second time his black pup to at least one result which keeps all camps happy. Its the best of causes, next attempt we all need to get out ar*es in gear please. Lets contribute to the record next time!!! I won't name names because I personally know 2 of these Cockers and I share their embarrassment. But fair fecks to them to contributing.

Best feeling from the day, was the total influx of the public at large, this was a non show event, the public attended in droves to partake, the atmosphere was just "Happy Day Out". And we were all the better with it.
